Artist in Residence
For my first Artist Talk at Fettes College, I introduced my creative practice and professional journey, tracing my path from A levels through a Foundation Diploma at University of the Arts London, to my studies at Edinburgh College of Art, and into my post-graduate work. I aimed to give an honest and insightful account of the practical and conceptual skills I’ve developed along the way. The talk not only offered students a real-world perspective on an artist’s progression but also helped me establish a deeper connection with both staff and students at Fettes.
In my presentation, I shared my recent research into artists, exhibitions, films, events, and publications, offering insight into my creative thought process. My aim was to encourage students to reflect on their own ways of thinking and making, while emphasising the value of individuality in research. I highlighted the importance of pursuing personal interests with both openness and criticality, inspiring them to develop a more authentic and independent artistic voice.
‘View’ January 2025 in the Foyer Gallery, Fettes College
With support from teachers, the Lower Sixth held their first exhibition of the year, an uncommon but exciting event for that time. I played a key role in organising and encouraging student involvement. I also created an installation specifically for the exhibition, designed to showcase the students’ talents and promote collaboration.
The piece featured a physical frame with white fabric, set in the courtyard of the dining hall, illuminated by a video compilation of the students’ artwork that was in the exhibtion—filmed and edited by me—and accompanied by recorded sound pieces from Music students.
In collaboration with the Drama department, I organised a hands-on install session where the Tech Club, led by the Head of Theatre Tech, learned to set up a metal truss. This experience inspired one student to pursue a future as an AV Technician, beginning with work at the 2025 Fringe.
I worked with Drama to build the set and with Music to develop a sound piece for the artwork. My aim is to encourage greater collaboration between departments and demonstrate the power of cross-disciplinary teamwork in delivering successful creative projects.
I organised and led a student marketing initiative to promote the student exhibition ‘View’.
I mentored a group of Lower Sixth students interested in marketing, guiding them as they collaborated with the Fettes Marketing team and myself. Together, we developed a full promotional strategy focused on understanding marketing before, during, and after an event.
Under my direction, the team documented the exhibition install, created promotional materials—including the poster and leaflet—and captured the opening through interviews, photography, and video for the Fettes Art Instagram.
Thanks to this collaborative effort, the exhibition was a great success.
Starting in February 2025, I launched and organised a brand-new Artist Talk series at Fettes College, inviting seven visiting artists to share their diverse practices with students.
My goal was to highlight the breadth of creative careers and inspire students to see value in their own artistic interests and potential futures in the creative industries. I curated the entire programme, from selecting the artists to designing and producing the promotional posters for each talk to advertising the talks to staff and students.
The first event, featuring Lewis Baillie, was a great success, attracting around 20 students and several staff. His dynamic and personal talk set an exciting tone for the rest of the series.
The ‘Artist Talk Exhibition’, curated at the end of May 2025, marks the culmination of a year of Artist Talks at Fettes, showcasing work by the seven visiting artists and myself.
The final talk, by Marni Saunders on 21st May 2025, will be followed by a ‘Meet the Artist’ event, offering students the chance to engage with artists individually, gain insight into their creative processes, and seek advice about art education and careers. This leads into the exhibition opening, welcoming the wider school community to celebrate the artists’ contributions.
This exhibiton and series of events highlights evenst the value of creative exchange and community, concluding a meaningful and inspiring year at Fettes.
